How to Bathe a Ferret

Before bathing your ferret, there are things you need to know and consider, like the right type of shampoo, where and when to do it, and how to keep it as stress-free as possible, for you and your ferret. Fortunately, the art of bathing a ferret is quickly mastered, especially if you have many fur balls.

Choose the right shampoo. Use a shampoo that is safe for ferrets, cats or kittens. Baby shampoo will do too. Do not use dog shampoo: they can contain harsh chemicals safe for dogs, but very harmful to ferrets. Do not use strong shampoos or dish soap either: ferrets need a very gentle shampoo.

Choose the right place. A good place for a ferret bath is the bathroom sink. You could use the bathtub, but it tends to be hard on your back and knees. Do not use the kitchen sink for sanitary reasons.

Get plenty of clean towels.

Fill up the sink with warm water.

Always test the temperature of the water: you do not want to burn your little fur ball. Also, be aware that a ferret's body temperature is a bit higher than a Human's: between 99°F and 104°F, 101.9°F on average. Water that feels warm to you may feel a bit cold to your ferret.Fill up the sink until there is enough water to submerge your ferret's body, while his feet can still touch the bottom. You do not want your ferret to feel like he may drown.

Lather your ferret with shampoo.

Hold your ferret in one hand, still allowing his back legs to touch the bottom of the sink, pour the shampoo directly on his back, and lather well. You can also pour the shampoo on your hand and rub them together first, but that may give time for your ferret to run.Be careful not to put shampoo in your ferret's eyes, nose and ears. If you do get shampoo in his eyes, flush with clean and warm water, gently, using your cupped hand.Rinse you ferret thoroughly. Leaving shampoo residue in your ferret's fur can dry it out and make him itchy. It also attracts dirt. Make a first rinse in the initial bath water.Drain the water and fill the sink again with clean and warm water, being mindful of the temperature. Rinse your ferret again.Drain the water again and have the faucet run with warm water. You can hold the ferret directly under the faucet if the pressure isn't too high. Or you can use a cup and pour the water on the ferret.Rinse the head carefully with your hand. Do not pour water directly on his head, you do not want to drown your ferret.Rinse your ferret well, everywhere. Do not forget to rinse hard-to-reach places like the throat or armpits. Again, your ferret must be completely shampoo-free or he may get itchy.

Use a towel to dry your ferret as well as you can.

Let your ferret finish drying himself on his own. Put one or two clean towels on the floor or in a clean area, like the bathtub.Have your ferret rub himself clean on and between layers of towels. You can help him go in between layers.Enjoy the show. Always keep an eye on your ferret while he's drying himself, so he doesn't get himself dirty right away.
