How to Scream (Rock Music)

Ever wanted to scream like Linkin Park, System of a Down, or Slipknot? Sure, you could do it once the wrong way, but then you'll never be able to do it again. If you want to scream longterm, you need to do it healthily -- the right way. This isn't one of those "no pain, no gain" situations. You gotta protect your voice while screaming your lungs out. And, yes, you'll still sound good!

OK, let's break it down to you. Four locations you need to know in your body. Your mouth, your throat/pharynx, your chest, and your diaphragm. While
screaming, each of these parts have "jobs".

Lets start from the top. Your mouth releases the sound and forms the scream into words. Your mouth should be opened as wide as possible. DO NOT distort the sound with your mouth. You will hurt your throat.

Now for your throat. The throat has one purpose and one purpose only. Create the tone. It must be as open as possible. It is ONLY to create a tone to your scream. DO NOT make distortion from the throat. That is the biggest mistake that all screamers make. You will kill your voice within days.

Open up the muscles in the top of your chest, open your mouth wide and breathe. That is the feeling you want in your throat while screaming.
If you feel air trapped, immediately stop.

The chest is where the distortion comes from. The windpipe is at its strongest in the chest area. That is where you want to constrict the sound.

When you are talking normally the air comes from your chest. To scream, you want the air to come from your diaphragm. The diaphragm is a muscular structure that rests underneath your lungs. It is the organ that makes you breathe. All the force of your scream originates right there.

So from the force of your diaphragm the sound gets constricted and distorted in your chest which releases right through your open throat and comes out your mouth which should be wide open.
